Renaissance Men

[The Berkley Babes, Nalini Singh] — Nalini Singh @ 5:11 am

I was reading one of my keeper books the other day - Wildest Hearts by Jayne Ann Krentz, when I realized I have a real weakness for her brand of Renaissance men. You know, the very smart (sometimes even nerdy) guys who can get physical when it counts. These are tough men but they can also be scholars, drink green tea and meditate. Wow!

I also adore Roarke from the JD Robb books. So cool, so dangerous, so bad. And very, very smart. I guess I like my romance heroes smart and strong. How about you? Who’s your favorite hero and why do you like him?

  1. Nalini:

I’m with you. I love smart and COMPETENT! They don’t have to have the coolest car (or horse, if we’re talking historicals) or the biggest bank account, just as long as they love what they do, and are great at it!

  2. Hi Nalini,

I love strong heroes who have a brain, too. Plus I love tortured/wounded heroes.

  3. Nalini, I think of those guys as the Indiana Jones type hero, equally at home with dusty books or battling demons  I love them in fantasy/paranormal/historical settings, but like Danny I love a bit of the wounded hero too.

  4. Yes, Jolie - competent is so hot! It’s why I love blue collar heroes as much as billionairre types.

Danny - got to agree with you. There’s something very compelling about a wounded man letting the heroine in close. Sigh…

Saskia - Indiana Jones - love it! I used to have such a crush on Harrison Ford

  5. Smart, and a bit of a bastard.

I can’t help it. I tend to liek the heros to be a bit of a bastard at the start of a story, then when we understand him better, he’s a true hero. I guess I like this in my hero’s becasue most men I meet in real life are a bit of a bastard LOL so It gives me hope I’m just misunderstanding them.

  6. LOL Sasha! I don’t know - I always wonder if he’s really changed. But then again, it depends on how well the author sets it up - ie. why is he a bastard? If he’s just born that way…

  7. I love alpha heroes. Powerful, warrior-types who can take care of the heroine (in more ways than one), but who also has a soft side…and isn’t afraid to show it.
Sasha, I know exactly what you mean about liking the hero to be a bit of a bastard. There is something sexy about that…as long as he’s not too much of a bastard. Then it’s hard to redeem him :) .

  8. Indiana Jones–exactly! He may seem mild-mannered and ‘normal’ at the start, but as the danger escalates and we get to know him better, we see him rise to the occasion, and then look out! That’s my type of hero :)
