Talking Promo

[The Berkley Babes, Nalini Singh] — Nalini Singh @ 3:20 am

Inspired by Julia’s awesome post on book trailers, I’m going to ask you all a question that I think most authors would love to know the answer to. What kind of promotional effort works best for you?

1. Widgets - bookmarks/magnets etc.

2. Free copies of an author’s book

3. Reviews

4. Recommendations from friends

5. Other (?)

  1. I, myself love the books. I have found sever new authors I like that I’ve never read before. If it wasn’t for that free book I won, read and loved. I wouldn’t have picked up the book. I usually look for my books by author. Now that author is on my list to look for.
I go with the free book. One free book will lead to several sales to other books. Book marks are fine, but I never use them. I have a special one I use. I like one that has a solid side. None of the bookmarks that the authors send out have that so they all get set aside or given away. Filed somewhere.
Reviews, I don’t read unless I need it for a contest.
If a friend recomends a book, well most of the time they will loan me their book to read.

  2. I’m one of those people that if I find an author I REALLY like (9 times out of 10 this is from advanced reader’s copies), I read everything that they have written and clamor for more. Book trailers are nice but I usually only look at those when I’m reading the book.

  3. I have to agree with Tammy G. I am a fan of the free books and feel they work best for me. I have found several new-to-me authors that have become must-buy authors from free books (from giveaways and other places)…but I understand that could be expensive for authors.

I collect all the bookmarks, magnets, and other promo items that I get, but I don’t think they make me want a book any more or any less.

I don’t really pay attention to reviews unless it is to get a bit more info about a book’s plot. Everyone has different tastes so what one reviewer hates, I may love and what they love, I might not.

Recommendations from friends are appreciated and sometimes make me find out more about a book, but that doesn’t mean I will be more likely to buy it.

So free copies of the book work best for me.

  4. I like recommendations from friends, especially from Jolie since we tend to like the same type of books ;) .

  5. Looks like free books are in the lead. Which is awesome because I’m giving away an ARC on my blog

  6. Who doesn’t like free books? I’ve won books that I’d not have bought because I was unsure I’d like them. It’s a good way to be introduced to new authors. I read reviews when I want to know more about the plot of a book. I like pens and pads as promo items. I don’t have need of bookmarks because I can’t hold print books due to my disability.

  7. The free books work for me. I have found several new authors to read by winning a free book.

  8. I have to agree with majority vote here. A free book to intro duce me to a new author or genre will definitely grab my attention. Because I live on a limited income I tend to shy away from books and authors I am unsure of. Reviews don’t really affect me as I have found many books that I love though the reviewer really didn’t. My mom is really the only person who reads romance so I have to depend on her for her opinion most of the time. Soon after she recommends one I usually receive it from her in the mail. We live a few states apart from each other. Bookmarks and magnets do tend to keep a book in my mind since I see those little reminders frequently. The only problem is that they don’t really inform me that much about the book itself.

  9. After promo lane at this year RT, I looked up many new authors and added their books to my tbb list. I collect them and they always remind me when I use them to check if there is a new book coming out.

Free books are the way I discovered most of my new authors. I like to enter contest and for me here in Germany it’s not so easy to discover new authors just by walking through a book store. My favorite thing when I am in the US. LOL

As a reviewer I read reviews, but I discovered that I like to make my own opinion about a book. So I am not so much influence by a bad review.

  10. All of the above but I love to receive a free copy of an author’s book. I’ve received several lately and I’m reviewing them for my MySpace blog. I just tried to post in your blog, Nalini, but I couldn’t get in. I’ll try later as I’d love to review your book and do a feature in MySpace.

  11. I love free books too! LOL
I love giving them away, and getting them.

However, another question for you all. Do they have to be print books? or are eBooks just as good as a giveaway?

I write both, and like to giveaway both. :)

  12. Sasha - personally, I think ebooks would work as well. A lot of my readers actually email wanting to know if the ebook versions of my books are out - it’s opened my eyes to how many people read in e-format these days.

    Comment by Nalini Singh — December 21, 2006 @ 4:42 pm

  13. Sasha,

I get several of my review arcs as ebook books, but most of the time I print them out. Just take for example bound or Nalini’s Slave to sensation, these are long books and my pda always looses power on the best scenes. So it’s better to have a print version.
