Addictions

[Sasha White] — Admin @ 12:45 pm

I’m addicted to suspense novels, Underdog movies and Pop.  Doesn;t matter what kind of pop, Diet Dr.Pepper is my favorite, but I’ll pretty much drink any kind.

I’d like to be addicted to working out. I guess I should also say that I think I have a fairly addictive personality and that if I can get my butt to the gym consistently for two weeks I’ll be addicted to that as well. The same thing goes for writing. At times it fills my head and my heart and all I can do is think about writing. My characters become a part of me, or maybe part of me goes into my characters? I’m not sure how it works, but there are definietly times when the story is all that fills my head.  I plan what I want to write and write whatever flows from my fingertips with-out it ever even hitting my brain. That stuff is pretty good, sometimes.

Then there are the times that I think I should be writing, I should be working out, but really, all I want to do is read a book , watch a movie and eat junk food. Or even eat really good healthy food, as long as someone else cooks it.

Like all addictions, sometimes writing isn;t good for my health. How is that possible you ask?  Well, it’s that addictive thing.  ANd right now, I’m so close to the end of the current manuscript, that it’s all I do.  I eat popcorn, pizza, and pop while I sit at my computer and do nothing but write.  And honestly…when I’m done the story…I crash.  I think this time I’ll sleep for a week. Probably not the healthiest way to get things done…but it works for me.

What are your addictions? What do you do when you need to recharge? How do you indulge yourself? Share please…who knows, you might end up as a character in a story someday. If you don’t mind that is. ;)

  1. My main addiction is books, 99% of which are romance. You see I am a collector, ebook or paper, once I get hooked on an author or series, I have to buy them all. And when do I expect to read all these jewels? I mean I could outfit the neighborhood with my tbr pile. Thankfully, having ebook choices has cut down a lot on the mongo piles I already have through out the house. And even then, I always have a monster wish list..I used to be a daily mocha frapp girl, but I weaned myself off, which was pretty hellish, but I still am a jelly belly addict. I’ve got it down to once a day, but tv time at night, out they come, and they have to be sours…so how’s that?

  2. Hi Cathy! I wean myself from Pop every now and then. The first few days is hell. But I do okay until I get stressed. As soon as stress, like a deadline of a conference or something comes up… out comes the Diet Dr.Pepper. :)

  3. I love caffeine when I’m stressed, especially Coke, but it has to be the real deal, not diet for me, and definitely not Pepsi.

  4. Sasha,
I’m addicted to Everlasting Gobstoppers, romance novels and research books! I love the process of writing, and when I’m finished with a story, I usually indulge myself with a massage…or a night at my favorite resort. It’s the perfect way to relax and unwind.

  5. Dark chocolate, hands down. :) And working. I tend to overwork when things are bothering me, whether it’s cleaning or writing…

Watch that pop…it’s soooooo bad for you! (Just what you always wanted to hear!)

  6. Gobstoppers!! Yum!

I’m trying to find something other than pop or pocorn to keep my jaw busy while I write, maybe I’ll try those!

Alyssa, you sould like a Mom!

  7. My addictions are only two things: Mt. Dew and reading. I’ve been known to stay up a full 24 hours just to finish a book that somehow glued itself to my fingertips while I wasn’t looking.

  8. Good post - my addictions include coffee (no kidding), diet Coke (and not diet Pepsi), working/writing, and internet browsing. I do not keep certain things in the house as they will lead to my downfall (peanut M&Ms and chocolate chip cookies). Like you, Sasha, the exercise thing is tough but it can be addictive. Once I was addicted to running every day (I even ran the NYC marathon). For sure, the M&Ms and chocolate chip cookies could make a reappearance in my cupboard if I could actually start that running addiction up again!
